WASHINGTON-In June, for the second month in a row, shipments of tires to the U.S. replacement market rose from the year-ago month, increasing in all product categories. This follows a strong performance in May in which replacement shipments in most tire segments improved, with the exception of medium and wide-base truck tires.
In passenger tires, shipments rose 7.5 percent during the most recent month to 16.1 millon units, pushing the six-month total ahead of 1993 by 4.7 percent to 83.8 million units.
June shipments of light truck tires increased 5.7 percent to 2.16 million units, while those of medium & widebase truck tires leapt 15.3 percent to 1.2 million units.
Shipments of heavy and large off-the-road truck tires also grew, rising 12.5 percent to 38,600 units.
In the tractor and implement tire category, shipments advanced 9.2 percent for the month to 225,600 units.
Shipments of industrial and utility tires showed the greatest monthly improvement, increasing 34.1 percent to 359,000 units from June 1993. This pushed the year-to-date total ahead of last year by 13.6 percent to 1.89 million units.
For the month the radial component of these tires soared 2,125.5 percent to 42,700 units, while the yearly total stands 672.7 percent ahead of 1993.
