ORLANDO, Fla.-Former Jim Martin Tire Co. President David L. Cobb has joined Action/Gator Tire Stores Inc. as vice president and chief financial officer. Mr. Cobb, who had been working as a financial consultant, is expected to help expand Action/Gator Tire, an 11-outlet retail tire sales and complete automotive service chain based in Orlando, owner Paul Christensen said.
``I'm sure with (Mr. Cobb) coming on board, we're going to have more expansion,'' Mr. Christensen said. ``I think it will enable us to become larger.''
Mr. Cobb, who had worked with data processing for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, entered the tire business when he joined Jim Martin Tire as controller in 1973. In less than one year he began running that outfit's retail operations. Later, he took control of Jim Martin Tire's commercial, wholesale and import/export operations.
In 1977, he became president of Jim Martin Tire, a position he held until 1988, when the business was sold to Automotive Industries Inc.
During Mr. Cobb's stay with the Florida-based dealership, Jim Martin Tire's sales grew from $2.8 million to more than $45 million, Mr. Cobb noted.
``There are so many interesting and genuine people in the tire industry,'' Mr. Cobb said during an interview. ``I formed great relationships throughout the industry (while with Jim Martin Tire).''
After staying on with Automotive Industries for a short transitional period, and then waiting out the terms of his contract's non-competition clause, Mr. Cobb began consulting for General Tire in the U.S. and Canada. In 1990, he left the tire maker to consult for others in the tire industry.
Two years ago, Mr. Cobb joined American Tire Recyclers in Jacksonville, later becoming that company's president from 1992 until November 1993. He continued to consult for the industry until joining Action/Gator July 5.
Although Mr. Cobb declined to comment on specific plans for Action/Gator, he did say one of his first tasks with the company will be overseeing its computerization.
