SALEM, Va.-Yokohama Tire Corp. is expanding and upgrading its Salem tire plant to increase the number of products the firm makes in the U.S. The $50 million project-begun in the fall of 1993 and expected to be completed this fall-will boost annual plant production 20 percent to 6 million units, a company spokeswoman said, adding that Yokohama continuously has brought new machinery into the plant since late 1992.
The technology upgrade will enable the subsidiary of Japan's Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. to make product lines previously made outside the U.S., though the company would not specify what those lines will be.
In 1993, 70 percent of Yokohama's consumer products sold in the U.S. were produced in Salem. The factory supplies both the original equipment and replacement markets in the U.S.
