NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Craig T. Nelson, star of the ABC television series ``Coach'' and founder of Screaming Eagles Racing Enterprise, will compete against driver Hurley Haywood and others in the Bridgestone Car and Driver One Lap of America race. The 5,000-mile race meanders through the Central and Western U.S. begining June 5 in Detroit. It ends in that city six days later.
Messrs. Nelson and Haywood will be driving 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera sports cars with Bridgestone tires.
One Lap was created in 1985 by Brock Yates, an editor of Car and Driver magazine. The competitors maintain precise course and speed on open roads, with penalty points accrued for being ahead or behind schedule at periodic checkpoints. They will also compete against the clock on various race tracks along the route, including Road America in Elkhart, Wis., and Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix.
Screaming Eagles Racing-named for the football team Mr. Nelson's ``Hayden Fox'' character coaches on TV-leads the 1994 American Cities Racing League and plans to compete in the International Motor Sports Association's World Sports Car series.
