AKRON-Goodyear has designed a new all-season high-performance tire that will appear as original equipment on 1995 models from several automakers. The Eagle RS-A features four circumferential grooves and an asymmetric tread design that divides the tread into three sections:
The outside shoulder is stiffer for improved handling and cornering;
The central tread area features lateral ``S'' grooves for wet handling and traction;
The inside shoulder has low stiffness and added blading to enhance snow traction and ride comfort.
Compared with the Eagle GT+4, Goodyear's first all-season high-performance tire, the Eagle RS-A delivers 3 percent better dry handling and 5 percent better snow handling, and is 10 percent quieter, the company said.
Car makers that have selected the new tire for OE use include:
General Motors Corp., on the Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Lumina, as well as the Cadillac de Ville Concours, in size P225/60R16 with a H speed rating;
Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., on the 240SX, in size P195/60R15, and the Maxima, size P215/60R15, both H-rated; and
Diamond Star Motors Corp., on the Plymouth Laser/Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse, in size P205/60R15 with a speed rating of H or V.
A Goodyear spokesman said that, as these cars are introduced, the Eagle RS-A will be made available to dealers in the appropriate replacement sizes. GREENVILLE, S.C.-Chrysler Corp. has become the first U.S. automaker to select Michelin fuel-saving ``Green X'' tires for original equipment fitment on a production vehicle.
According to Michelin North America, Chrysler will fit versions of the Michelin XW4 and MX4 radials that incorporate the tire maker's ``Radial XSE'' technology on its 1995 Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Cirrus.
Radial XSE technology results in tires with lower rolling resistance-which in turn improves fuel economy-and better performance in wet and snow, without sacrificing other characteristics such as long tread life, Michelin said. Tires that use the technology are designated ``Green X.''
The Dodge Stratus will be shod with the XW4, size P195/70R14, or the H-rated MXV4, size P195/65R15.
The Chrysler Cirrus will feature the MX4 or the H-rated MXV4, depending on equipment level, in size P195/65R15.
