WASHINGTON-TBC Corp. President and COO Louis S. DiPasqua will address the opening session of the National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association's annual convention and trade show, Sept. 9-11 in Dallas, while former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Jack Kemp will speak at the convention's final session. During his keynote remarks, Mr. DiPasqua will discuss the outlook for the tire business, independent tire dealers and the private brand market.
Mr. Kemp, a potential Republican presidential candidate in 1996, will present his alternative economic vision for the U.S.
Treadco boosts sales 40% in first quarter
FORT SMITH, Ark.-Boosted by sales from new stores, Treadco Inc. increased its 1994 first-quarter revenues 40.2 percent, compared with the year-earlier period, to $29.9 million. New outlets accounted for two-thirds of the increase, the company said.
Compared to the first quarter of 1993, sales from retreading operations increased 35.2 percent to $17 million, while new-tire sales jumped 47.3 percent to $13 million. Net income increased 3.3 percent during that same period to $904,517, the company said.
General to supply mIss. state agencies
AKRON-Mississippi has awarded General Tire a one-year contract to supply tires to all state agencies, including the state police and department of transportation.
General Tire dealers in Mississippi will supply the state with General XP2000AS police pursuit tires, AmeriÃTech 4 passenger tires, five light-truck tire sizes and about 25 different commercial tire products.
The agreement, effective until March 31, 1995, increases General's business with the state. Previously, the tire maker had supplied the state with just two sizes of pursuit tires.
Goodyear announces Cakuf, Just Tires sites
NORRISTOWN, Pa.-Goodyear's expansion of its Just Tires will take the retail concept into 28 California cities when the company completes its previously announced conversion of 31 Goodyear certified auto centers in the Los Angeles area.
The change, to be completed by July 1, will affect Goodyear stores in: Garden Grove, Costa Mesa, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach (2), Industry (2), Bellflower, Montclair, Corona, West Hollywood, Panorama City, Hollywood, Culver City, Long Beach, Torrance, Buena Park, Ventura, Monterey, Cerritos, Arcadia, Glendale, Thousand Oaks, Canoga Park, Northridge, Riverside, Sherman Oaks, Orange, Laguna Hills and Oxnard.
Goodyear also is building a new Just Tires location in Tustin.
Flying truck tires kill woman inside house
MOBILE, Ala.-In a freak accident May 3 in Mobile, a set of tires broke from a tractor-trailer rig and crashed through a house, killing a sleeping woman.
The tandem wheels, from the rear of the trailer, crashed through the wall at about 4:25 a.m. and hit the ceiling before striking the 41-year-old victim, who was in bed.
Police said the truck driver, also 41 of Robertsdale, Ala., was unaware of the accident. No charges were filed in the death.
Federal transportation officials said a similar accident could be repeated if truckers ignore faulty bearings and loose lug nuts.
