FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.-Don Olson Tire & Auto Centers plans to relocate the operations of two Fort Lauderdale commercial dealerships it recently acquired to a new regional headquarters during the next six months. In February, Clearwater, Fla.-based Don Olson Tire purchased Rountree Tire, a commercial outlet and retread shop in Fort Lauderdale, from Jim and Janet Delph, who said they had been planning to retire after 17 years in the business.
Ken Simmons, founder of Ken's Bandag Inc. of Hartford City, Ind., who joined Rountree Tire early last year as general manager, resigned during the buyout negotiations and is working as an independent retreading consultant.
At the same time, Don Olson Tire also bought Dakota Tire, a commercial dealership with locations in Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers.
The Dakota Tire operations have been consolidated at the Rountree Tire location with former Dakota Tire owner Greg Rittberger serving as general manager of the combined operations. The operation has been renamed Don Olson Truck Tire Centers.
However, the consolidation has left no room for expansion, so now Don Olson Tire President Larry Morgan is looking to relocate the operations to a larger, regional truck tire/retread facility in the Fort Lauderdale area.
This facility would serve as headquarters for the dealership's commercial tire operation on Florida's east coast, according to Mr. Morgan.
Since the acquisition, the Rountree retread plant has been producing about 100 tires daily. Mr. Morgan hopes to double that within a year at the new facility.
Don Olson Tire, which currently has 11 truck tire centers, two retread shops and 60 retail stores in Florida, plans to add a dozen new locations by year-end via acquisitions and new construction.
