NASHVILLE, Tenn.-Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. plans to boost its U.S. tire exports by more than 65 percent this year. BFS raised exports of U.S.-made tires by 38 percent in 1993 and said more than 90 percent of the passenger tires and 80 percent of the truck tires it sold last year in the U.S. were produced in the U.S.
The North American Free Trade Agreement has helped stimulate exports to Mexico, making it one of the tire maker's fastest-growing export markets, BFS said.
The Nashville-based subsidiary of Bridgestone Corp. of Tokyo has also begun exporting Firestone-brand tires to Japan.
General adds testing machine
AKRON-General Tire has acquired a multimillion dollar, highway speed uniformity machine-said to be one of only two in the world-to aid in tire testing.
The SUM67 measures the force, moment and balance variation of a tire as it rotates at speeds of up to 150 mph.
Such variations are important because they can produce vibration and noise inside a vehicle-the two most common reasons for customer dissatisfaction and tire warranty adjustment, the company said.
The machine is housed at General's tire dynamics lab in Akron and is connected to the company's development database, giving engineers immediate access to test results.

BFG LT tire does well in Japan
GREENVILLE, S.C.-Four Japanese publications have found a U.S.-made BFGoodrich-brand light truck tire-the Winter Radial T/A-superior to competing Bridgestone, Yokohama, Dunlop and Toyo tires, according to Michelin Americas Small Tires.
The tire maker said articles in the February 1994 issues of 4 4 Magazine, 4WD Freak, Off-Road Spirits and Let's Go 4WD, reported that the tire was judged excellent in such areas as snow and ice traction, quietness, ride comfort and lateral grip.
