FORT WAYNE, Ind.-Union members at Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Co.'s Fort Wayne factory overwhelmingly approved a new contract Feb. 12, prompting the tire maker to withdraw its plant closure notice. United Rubber Workers Local 715 voted to accept changes such as rotating shifts and reducing from five shifts to four.
The URW ``was convinced there would be no further movement by the company,'' with the next step plant closure, said a spokesman.
Layoffs were slated to begin in March, with the plant closing as early as May 9.
The firm told workers they needed the contract changes to make the factory more competitive, claiming the unit's 1993 losses exceeded $30 million.
With the reduction in shifts, staffing at the plant will be cut by 400-500.
