AKRON-Goodyear will invest $4.4 million in its Napanee, Ontario, plant this year to increase the plant's ability to manufacture Goodyear Eagle high-performance tires. Goodyear will purchase equipment to convert production capacity from passenger tires to high performance tires, without affecting the overall capacity of the plant.
The investment is in response to a growing demand for high-performance tires in both the OE and replacement markets, according to Goodyear.
Galazy Tire to open Houston sales office
MALDEN, Mass.-Galaxy Tire will open a sales office and distribution center in Houston on March 1 to meet growth demands in the South Central markets, particularly Texas, according to Galaxy Tire, a subsidiary of the Gans Tire Co. Inc.
The tire marketer appointed Bob Arnold, former vice president of Bonanza Tire in Houston, as director of Southwest sales and operations, reporting to Raymond W. Evans, vice president of sales and marketing.
Mr. Evans recently relocated his office from Hudson, Ohio, to Galaxy's Malden headquarters.

General exec Eaton retires after 18 years
AKRON-William W. Eaton, vice president of dealer relations and private brands for General Tire, will retire at the end of February to pursue other interests, the company said.
Mr. Eaton, 59, has spent more than 40 years in the tire business, including 18 with General in a number of sales management positions.
A longtime friend of Indy 500 winner Parnelli Jones, Mr. Eaton said he plans to help further the career of Mr. Jones' two sons, who are drivers on the racing circuit, by helping secure sponsorships.
Kirk Kaelber, director of private brand sales, will take over some of Mr. Eaton's responsibilities.
ARA to host forum on zipper problems
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-The American Retreaders' Association will host a tire industry forum on the problem of zippers occurring in steel radial truck and light truck tires.
The forum is scheduled for April 20 at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, Louisville, prior to the opening of the ARA World Tire Conference.
A panel of industry experts will discuss the extent of the problem, its causes, what can be done to prevent zippers and what additional precautions can be taken to avoid injuries to service personnel.

Denman opens sales office, warehouse
LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio-Denman Tire Corp. has opened a new 135,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in Austintown Township, Ohio, to meet expansion needs.
The Leavittsburg-based specialty tire maker also has opened a branch office in Las Vegas to increase service to its West Coast customers.
Denman's western regional sales manager, Chris Fouts, will head the new office.
Denman, which said it has been experiencing rapid growth, plans to ship more than 600,000 tires from its new warehouse this year. Denman's former warehouse was located in Lordstown, Ohio.
Bidgestone Blizzak lauded by newspaper
LOS ANGELES-The Bridgestone Blizzak studless snow tire has been named one of the 10 best products of 1993 by the consumer reporters of the Los Angeles Times.
The tire has a multi-cell compound containing microscopic pores which make dents in the tire tread surface, resulting in a firmer grip in snow and ice, according to Bridgestone/Firestone Inc.
The tire, which was sold in 17 60-, 65- and 70-series sizes in 1993, was the only tire to make the newspaper's list of best products.
Nitto Tire changes base of operation
LOS ANGELES-Nitto Tire moved its headquarters from San Jose, Calif., to Los Angeles on Feb. 7.
