First Brands Corp., which recalled the sealant-type aerosol tire inflator marketed under the trade names STP Flat Tire Repair and STP Flat Fixer, has issued the following instructions for tire service personnel attempting to repair a tire that is believed to contain a sealant-type inflator: Remove the valve core from the tire before starting a repair;
Take the tire completely off the rim in an open, well-ventilated area;
Keep the tire away from open flames or sparks;
Do not smoke while repairing the tire; and
Do not use a tire reamer until all of the air in the tire has been safely expelled.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Rubber Manufacturers Association also have issued guidelines for the repair of flat tires that may contain an aerosol sealant:
Assume a tire may have been repaired with an aerosol product;
Be cautious when using metal tools that have the potential to cause sparks;
Remove the valve core before starting to fix a tire; and
Inflate and deflate the tire several times to remove as much propellant as possible.
