SAN FRANCISCO-There's nothing brewing, but Continental A.G. Chairman Hubertus von Grunberg is open to an alliance with another company. ``I'm totally open,'' he said of the idea. ``It only depends on the pragmatic criteria of what we can win-if it is a win-win and we both really do get better, or do we just make headlines.''
Interviewed during the recent General Tire dealer meeting in San Francisco, Mr. von Grunberg said Conti has no hard feelings toward Pirelli Group, which tried to force a merger with the firm in 1991. ``I guess there are no wounds left behind by either side,'' he said.
But an alliance could be with anybody, he added, pointing to the GTY Tire Co. plant in Mount Vernon, Ill., which Conti successfully operates with partners Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. and Yokohama Rubber Corp.
Before reaching out to someone else, Conti first would have to talk with them, ``because we are in business with them today and we are successful there.''
