Tire Group International Inc., a wholesale import/export company opened in 1992, celebrated its move into a 200,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in Miami with a grand opening/holiday party Dec. 20. The company stores about $2 million in inventory in 40,000 square feet of the warehouse and posted sales of $12 million during 1993, according to Antonio R. Gonzalez, company co-owner and vice president of marketing. Mr. Gonzalez said the company does about 65 percent of its business in the Caribbean, Central American and South American markets but plans to open a retail outlet in Miami by the end of 1994.
Dayton, Ohio-based Grismer Tire Co., a commercial/retail/wholesale operation with one Bandag retreading plant, purchased two Shimer's Tire Inc. retail outlets in Dayton and Springfield, Ohio, late last year from past NTDRA president John Shimer and took over the lease on a Goodyear location in Englewood, Ohio, as part of its continuing expansion plans in the Dayton-area market, according to President John L. Marshall.
Mr. Marshall said the Springfield and Englewood outlets will remain in operation, but the Dayton store has been closed because of an existing Grismer outlet.
Tire Warehouse Central Inc. added its 18th franchise location Nov. 20: Walpole Valley Tire Co. in Walpole, N.H.
Walpole Valley Tire, owned by Victor Castellano and Richard Prentiss, will operate under the Tire Warehouse name and system.
Tire Warehouse Central also operates 25 company-owned tire stores, 16 auto parts businesses and one wholesale distribution center. The company said it has plans for 12 additional locations in 1994.
Tire Masters International Inc. closed its Mesa, Ariz.-based retail tire and automotive service operation, Country Club Tire & Wheel, and its high performance outlet, Country Club Performance, Nov. 29, citing high operating costs.
A spokesman for Tire Masters, a wholesale subsidiary of Nissho Iwai American Corp., said the company has no further downsizing plans.
Tire Masters also owns Consumer Tire Auto Centers in Hawaii.
Stan's Tire & Auto Service Center, of Lafayette, Colo., recently won the Carquest Corp.'s second annual Carquest Excellence Award for outstanding consumer service and technical expertise in the automotive service industry.
Shop owner Stan Elmore received a trophy and a $10,000 prize.
