PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — TBC Corp. has agreed to sell 112 NTB Tire & Service Centers in the greater Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia metro areas to Mavis Discount Tire, extending Mavis' marketing footprint into the Midwest and strengthening its presence in the Northeast and Southeast.

"This agreement with NTB will enable us to grow our footprint in key markets, and we are excited to welcome the talented NTB team members affiliated with these 112 locations to the Mavis family," David Sorbaro, Co-CEO of Millwood, N.Y.-based Mavis, said in a statement released by TBC.

"We know that NTB team members are highly committed to exceptional customer support, and we are confident that customers at these locations will continue to receive best-in-class service."

The stores being sold are located in the Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia "designated market areas," TBC said.

The deal, for which no financial details were released, will shrink TBC's retail presence to 615 locations — 408 under the NTB brand and 207 in Florida under the Tire Kingdom brand.

The deal will expand Mavis' retail footprint to more than 750 stores in 14 states, operating under the Mavis Discount Tire, Cole Muffler Brake, Somerset Tire, Kauffman Tire and Express Oil/Tire Engineers brands.

The company is in the process of rebranding as many as 200 of its Mavis Discount Tire stores throughout the South, Southeast and Atlantic Seaboard as "Mavis Tires & Brakes at Discount Prices" as part of a trademark settlement with Reinalt-Thomas Corp., d.b.a. Discount Tire.

The companies did not indicate which brand identity Mavis will use in the Chicago area.

"Further consolidating our NTB footprint is consistent with our strategy to focus on core markets," TBC President and CEO Erik Olsen said, "and entering into this agreement with Mavis makes great strategic sense for our company.

"The cash from this sale will serve to accelerate strategic initiatives that we are confident will support our underlying mission to exceed the expectations of all of our customers and partners spanning retail, franchise, wholesale, distribution and ecommerce."

In addition, National Tire Wholesale (NTW) — TBC's wholesale distribution venture — and Mavis have entered into a distribution relationship, TBC said.

"We're looking forward to continuing our partnership with Mavis as we transition these locations and for years to come through our distribution relationship," Mr. Olsen said.

"I know that the customers in these (areas), first under the NTB brand and now with Mavis, will continue to experience an exceptional customer experience

This deal continues a growth-by-acquisition strategy that Mavis has carried out over the past decade, starting in 2008 with the acquisition of Cole Muffler Brake in 2008, Somerset Tire (STS) in 2015, Kauffman Tire's retail assets in 2018 and its merger with Express Oil & Tire Engineers in 2018.

Mavis Tire Supply L.L.C. is preparing to rebrand as many as 200 of its Mavis Discount Tire stores throughout the South, Southeast and Atlantic Seaboard as "Mavis Tires & Brakes at Discount Prices."

Mavis Discount Tire has been operating under that name since 1972 but its roots trace back to 1949.
