Sun Auto acquires Arizona-based Superior Tire

PHOENIX — Sun Auto Tire & Service Inc. has acquired Superior Tire, an automotive tire and auto repair dealership with four stores in northwest Arizona, Sun Auto's first in the Arizona-California-Nevada tri-state area.

Founded in 1979 by Kevin Burgess, Superior Tire operates stores in Bullhead City, Fort Mohave, Golden Valley and Kingman, with 37 auto service bays among them.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. The stores will retain the Superior Tire name.

Chris Garman, Sun Tire's vice president of development, said the company is "proud" to continue to provide quality service to Superior Tire customers.

"Over the past four decades, they've built a qualified team and earned a trusted reputation within their community, and we will work tirelessly to carry this legacy forward," Garman said.

Word of the acquisition comes just days after Sun Auto opened a greenfield-construction Sun Devil-branded store in Phoenix, spanning 7,720 square feet and with 14 service bays.

After doubling in size in 2021, Sun Auto operates 363 stores in 17 states.

Among the more recent acquisitions are T.O. Haas Tire (27 stores in Kansas and Nebraska), Delta World Tire (17 stores in Louisiana), and Plaza Tire Service (70 stores in Missouri and three neighboring states).

The portfolio company of Leonard Green & Partners, a Los Angeles-based private equity group, promises more acquisitions in 2022. Phoenix-based Sun Auto recently was named a finalist in Tire Business Best Places to Work survey.
