Bandamatic offering SmartWay treads

MEXICO CITY (Feb. 26, 2014) — H.B. plus Bandamatic has developed two precure tread rubber products that have been verified as meeting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay requirements for class 8 truck tractor and trailer tires.

H.B. plus Bandamatic, a unit of Mexico's Hules Banda S.A. de C.V., worked in partnership with Mexican synthetic rubber producer Industrias Negromex S.A. de C.V. to develop the compound used in the treads, marketed under the "Smartech" moniker.

The treads, Bandamatic TRA12 and BTM18, feature Negromex's Emulsil silica master batch and H.B.'s Smartech tread design technologies.

H.B. declined to say which retreader or retreaders produced the retreads used in the verification testing. The company did say it was able to develop the lower rolling-resistance treads without diminishing treadwear.

H.B. plus Bandamatic serves the U.S. market through an office in Houston.

Negromex is part of Grupo KUO, a leading industrial conglomerate, and is the sole producer of emulsion SR in Mexico.

Titan International and the United Steelworkers union have petitioned the U.S. International Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Commerce seeking relief from OTR tire imports from China, India and Sri Lanka. What’s your opinion?

I wholeheartedly support their action – something needs to be done.

I think it’s a bad idea that could inevitably tie the hands of domestic tire makers.

I oppose any duties against tire importers—they only raise costs for distributors and make it harder to obtain inventory.

I’m kind of on the fence and not sure what’s right, but need more information before deciding.

I don’t really care whether or not relief is granted.
