AKRON — Since I started at Tire Business, I have had to go to my local tire/automotive aftermarket repair shop twice. The first time I walked in, I had the print edition of Tire Business in hand because I had to leave my car overnight, so I had gathered up what I needed to take home.

U.S. AutoForce still lightly treading the course
COMBINED LOCKS, Wis. — The tire and auto parts market in 2013 is doing just about what Randy Groh, vice president of product marketing for U.S. AutoForce, expected it to do. However, Combined Locks-based U.S. AutoForce — auto parts wholesaler and owner of the Tire One marketing group — is outpacing the market, according to Mr. Groh. “We're definitely up this year,” he said. “Even without considering our acquisitions, we're seeing gains in sales.”

Falken looks for positive in an uncertain market
AKRON — “Cautious optimism.” The phrase has been a stand-by of tire industry professionals as the go-to economic outlook response in an uncertain, post-recession marketplace. The “cautious” portion of the phrase certainly rings true — evident by the Rubber Manufacturers Association's recently revising downward its already meager growth forecast for U.S. tire shipments to about 1 million units this year. However, Andrew Hoit, vice president of marketing for Falken Tire Corp., said the grim reality is more likely “cautious pessimism.”

Apollo Tyres buying Cooper Tire for $2.5B
GURGAON, India — India's Apollo Tyres Ltd. is buying Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. in an all-cash deal valued at $2.5 billion, or about a 40-percent premium over the 30-day volume-weighted average price of Cooper's stock. The combination of the Nos. 16 and 11 tire makers worldwide will create an entity with roughly $6.6 billion in annual sales — good for a No. 7 world ranking — and manufacturing at 14 plants in eight countries — China, England, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Serbia, South Africa and the U.S. Together the companies are calling this a “strategic combination” of two companies with “highly complementary brands, geographic presence, and technological expertise…”
